Located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, Cradock is an historical town in the valley of the Great Fish River, approximately 250kms from Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).

As one of the province’s main centres for the wool industry, Cradock is also known for its dairy and fruit farming.  A major economic development for Cradock was the creation of the Orange to Fish River Tunnel.  Completed in 1975, water is diverted from the Gariep Dam on the Orange River to the Great Fish River, then on to the Addo Valley.  This river diversion has made the annual Fish River Canoe Marathon possible attracting hundreds of paddlers from across the country every year.

Cradock is also known for the Mountain Zebra National Park which sits on its doorstep at only 15kms outside of town.  Here zebras, lion, buffalo and other wildlife can be found set in spectacular surroundings.

 

The town is filled with historical buildings and monuments, such as the Dutch Reformed Church and the Olive Schreiner House Museum.  Streets lined with Oak Trees, a restored water mill and the fantastic Karoo atmosphere makes Cradock a lovely town to break away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Cradock has some great adventure activities for tourists and is the perfect stop-over for those travelling between the major cities of the Eastern Cape.  The town hosts four major events every year bringing with it tourists from all over the world.
