Cradock – A Town in the Upper Valley of the Great Fish River

We were surprised to see how big Cradock was! This town is situated in the upper valley of the Great Fish River and has so much history. Cradock is a bigger town compared to the ones we usually explore, so we made a list of the places of interest which we thought were interesting to go and see. We started at the old and magnificent Dutch Reformed Church in the centre of town and I was very lucky to have the privilege to take a walk through the inside of this beautiful building. Then we saw the old Standard Bank building and so many more places which included our visit to Olive Schreiner's house which she lived in during her time in Cradock.

Cradock in the Eastern Cape is celebrating 200 years of existence

The Karoo town of Cradock in the Eastern Cape is celebrating 200 years of existence. Its one of the oldest towns in the province. It has a rich history in the struggle against Apartheid and has strong economic significance in the agricultural sector and tourism. It's the home of the Cradock Four - Mathew Goniwe, Sparrow Mkhonto, Fort Calata and Sicelo Mhlauli. They were abducted by the apartheid security forces in 1985 and assaulted, killed and their bodies and the vehicle in which they were travelling burnt. The current mayor Nyameka Goniwe is the widow of the late struggle activist Mathew Goniwe. Thousands of Cradock residents, both young and old - are scheduled to hold street parades in celebration of the anniversary. For more on the celebrations, we are joined from Cradock by SABC reporter Abongile Dumako who's standing by with Nomthandazo Krawe from Cradock Tourism
